I asked around so-called influencers why they were not on #Mastodon . Here are the most common replies:@marcprecipice @mekkaokereke @polotek @iwein @thisismissem @raphael @april @nixCraft this is a service we (the Mastodon org) currently provide to the EC (we also host their instance), and they pay for it. It is all very manual for now, but would be made much more easier with what I described here: https://renchap.com/blog/post/evolving_mastodon_trust_and_safety/
Our recently announced Fediscovery project will build the first bricks towards this. -
doing recruitment currently (not for my team, I can't give you a job) for a threat intel person and like a hundred people applied within a day - just in case anybody tells you there's a million open positions and they all pay $250k starting salary, it'...@GossiTheDog For our first recruitment at Mastodon, we published on all the usual platforms and got 1000+ applications, 98% of them failing the first initial checks.
For our last 2 positions, we posted the job offers on Mastodon and some hand picked communities (Slack, newsletters) and the overall quality has been really good, with some really awesome profiles -

Between FediForum and now the Social Web Foundation I'm very tired of seeing these intensely corporate initiatives in this space where the majority of projects are entirely volunteer (or grant supported) efforts@erincandescent if this brings money and financial stability to contributors and implementors then I am all for it. But so far I have not seen this happening. For example there are no companies working on Mastodon or sending significant resources towards it, except the Mastodon where we try to hire people full-time.

Damn it, #Mastodon subculture has a crap reputation and it’s honestly mostly deserved.@damon Thats really sad to hear this, but I agree. My big issue here is that I am not sure what Mastodon (the software project) can do to change things, it looks like more of a Fediverse cultural issue than a Mastodon thing. I would be very happy to hear your ideas on what Mastodon (the software) should do to improve this, in a call if you want.

Has anyone suggested yet adding affordances to make pronouns more visible in composers?@trwnh @jalcine note that we implemented something similar on Android, and still want to do it on other platforms, whej we have time: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/11/improving-the-quality-of-conversations-on-mastodon/
It does not includes the pronouns yet because there is no way to know which profile custom fields contain them (if they do) but iirc the original design did had them. -

Quick teaser for the weekend:@feditest I am curious about those 10s, can you explain more? Do you use the built in healthcheck endpoikt to determine when the webserver is available?
-
Boosts appreciated :boost_requested: as I accidentally messed up my follower list, and lost ALL followers from specific servers, including -@Natasha_Jay Out of curiosity, could you describe what you did that caused this? Maybe we can improve the interface so it does not happen anymore?

Account migration from #Mastodon :mastodon: to #GoToSocial :GoToSocial: was successful! :party_parrot:@bruno Some of those users that did not move might also be on instances that are not online anymore. Some other software asks for the follower to confirm before moving the follow, so expect more to move in the coming days/weeks from experience.
Also do not forget to run the self-destruct process on the old instance (and you may want to update to Mastodon 4.3 before doing so, as it has been improved a lot) -
@johannes.ernst @timothyjchambers I am unsure how this could work.@erincandescent @timothyjchambers Yes, also keeping in mind that this needs to work on native apps as well (with a webview). What we would like is this "embeddable" URL, and properly support a summary, that supports basic HTML tags and can be displayed in a timeline (which means reworking how CWs use summary atm).
Also there might be some security issues doing this, so there most probably need to be restrictions (+ recommendations) on what the iframe can display -
@johannes.ernst @timothyjchambers I am unsure how this could work.@johannes.ernst @timothyjchambers I am unsure how this could work. But maybe we need to have a way to view content from other software without having to jump to their website (and be disconnected?). We have been thinking about this for a while, maybe with having an embeddable URL in objects, that you can open in an iframe + modal?

Relaxing treatment of non-notes by Mastodon@julian This is totally not about growth hacking or engagement
Users see some content, click on it, then end up with a new UI, see a reply button, click on it, and are asked to create a new account, or to sign up (but not with their initial account). Our user testing (and many feedback) points that this is a very common issue with AP federation at the moment, even between Mastodon instances.
Not many people understand what is the federation and how to work around it -
Relaxing treatment of non-notes by Mastodon@julian We are doing our best to improve our implementation where we can, but it often requires a lot more work than what it initially seems. PRs are very welcome, but should probably be preceded by reaching out to us and seeing if we agree with the proposed implementation, and if it covers everything that it needs to

Relaxing treatment of non-notes by Mastodon@julian An issue we have with redirecting the user to the original post is that it makes it very hard for the user to interact with the post. We still want to improve this (in 4.4?) but are still very short on resources.
We discussed changing the "read more" button to open a modal, and (is this a good idea?) supporting an AP attribute with an iframe suitable for embedding the content, and changing the show more button to open a modal with this iframe
