@meetdilip I'd recommend migrating that SMF database to phpBB and then using @psychobunny's importer to import your content into NodeBB.

Should I switch to Digital Ocean?I use DO for all my websites. Never had an issue with them, no downtime or anything that I've noticed. It was a hurdle learning how to set up and manage a VPS, but I got it done and I like my setup a lot better now than what I had before (HostGator, then Hawkhost). I've got 6 websites on my 512MB droplet, 3 forums and 3 WordPress sites, and my webstack is composed of Debian 7 x64, nginx, php-fpm, and Maria DB for SQL.
If you do decide to make the jump and learn how to set things up and migrate, I recommend you learn how to use the scp command which will save you a lot of time downloading your old data and uploading it to your VPS. Also, use Mailgun or Mandrill as an SMTP server for your sites that need to send email, because using sendmail doesn't work very well and setting up your own mail server can be a major pain.
Feel free to send me a chat on here if you have any questions or need help during your move if you decide to move.

Popular forum exportersHaha yeah, I've been exporting through phpBB for years. Would never use phpBB for an actual forum though. Nice to know progress has been made on the importer @psychobunny. You should definitely focus on phpBB for the short term and then expand to cover others in the long term imo.
Will try your importer and see how things go.

Wish listI don't know what you mean by 1, and 2 is already implemented - you get a notification when someone upvotes your post.

Google Algorithm can read street numbers with over 90% accuracy, 99.8% accuracy with CAPTCHAsJust because Google can crack their own CAPTCHA service doesn't mean it's still not an effective measure against spambots. I definitely get a lot more spammers on my PHP-based forums without a CAPTCHA than I do with a CAPTCHA, so it's working somewhat. I still get human spammers though, not much you can do about that unless they've been added to an antispam list like StopForumSpam, and your forum software is configured to block emails, IPs, and usernames that have been logged X amount of times in the SFS database.
Point is, the era of the CAPTCHA is far from over.

[Solved] mark_all_readOn a related note, I think NodeBB should have a timeout on resources such as whatever's causing that mark_all_read bug. @julian @psychobunny

Whooooo wants WYSIWYG?@julian If you can do it better, I will be very impressed.
-
Whooooo wants WYSIWYG?Would love to see this as a side-by-side view, like in Ghost or Discourse. Format with Markdown on the left, or format with WYSIWYG on the right, and both panes update at the same time.

nodebb-plugin-starwarsYou could probably do it as a CSS animation and have it work in everything. Very cool though.

Option: Follow topics you reply to automatically@a_5mith I might be basing my dislike of those redundant notifications on the fact that I have Chrome notifications enabled for this forum, so I get two popups every time a mention of me plus a reply in a watched topic happens, but I still think it needs grouping.
-
Option: Follow topics you reply to automatically@a_5mith I think the notifications system needs to be overhauled anyway to group similar notifications (for example, I currently get a notification of being mentioned as well as a notification of a reply being added to this watched topic, which is redundant), although I do like the colored circle idea.
-
Option: Follow topics you reply to automatically@julian Awesome!
-
Option: Follow topics you reply to automaticallyWhen I reply to a topic, I'd like to be able to follow it automatically, as an option in the Settings area. This is a useful option that other forum software has and I think NodeBB would benefit from it.
Here's some reasons why:
- Users will be more engaged as more people reply
- It's easier than remembering to click the heart button > Watch
- It makes sense
Here's how it works in detail:
- Open up a topic
- Post reply to topic
- Topic is automatically added to subscriptions and you will be notified when new replies are posted
- Feature can be turned off in Settings

Unread section shows placeholder for Mark As Read@a_5mith Yep, that worked. Thanks.
-
Unread section shows placeholder for Mark As ReadHere's what's happening:
- Load https://community.nodebb.org in my browser (Chrome)
- Click Unread tab
- Button for "Mark As Read" reads as "mark_all_read". Screenshot:
- Reload https://community.nodebb.org/unread using browser refresh button
- "Mark As Read" shows up as a menu and select boxes appear on posts, which is how I think it's supposed to look. Screenshot:
Looked for the bug in Firecrap and IE, can't reproduce there. Seems to be a Chrome-only bug.

Articles ForumJust looks like some CSS changes, really. Might need some code for the featured image but that should be easy to accomplish if done based on the first image in the post.
I'm no NodeJS expert though. -
Popular forum exporters@psychobunny Really eager to see what you've made, I've got an IPB forum with 19k posts that I want to move to NodeBB, using phpBB as a bridge.

NodeBB exporter? There's very few forum softwares I've seen that allow you to export your data. Usually if you want to do that you just back up the database into a file and dig through that, but I'm not sure how that works with Regis.
The forum softwares I know of that do allow you to export only do it in a file compatible with that software.
