Couldn’t agree more! Have been enamored with Goodsell’s work for a long time, for example. On that note, it’s worth looking at cellPACK too.
I think especially molecular crowding in cellular environments can be tough. It’s so dense that the crowding often occludes the aspect of interest. But the crowding may also play a role in that aspect itself! Very challenging to effectively communicate, and subtly special when done well.

These pictures was all done in VMD by the way, but I’ve had to learn a lot of arcane tricks (fun though, but somewhat inaccessible) to make what I’ve had in my mind.
And a very beefy 500 GiB and great gpu machine. Don’t think I would’ve had the patience otherwise, and it still took a day to set everything up juuuust right. But people are also doing wild stuff with Blender, in particular. Also tried that on an earlier iteration of the mitochondrion demo.

@[email protected] One of the things I would love to do is some sort of VR visualization for systems (not just limited to proteins, obviously). There's a huuuuuge set of barriers to entrance there, though (which begin at me needing the time/energy/effort to learn how to program stuff in VR and absolutely do not end at the limited availability of open hardware).
But also yes! I totally forgot that Goodsell was a key factor in my own brain heading in that direction, too. Also, a whole day
