I've been experimenting with self-hosting everything, de-googling my life, and the balance of privacy/security vs. convenience. I wanted to travel the spectrum from an extreme "digital hermit" to something you might actually be able to convince a non-techy person to use.
I'm finding that you can get pretty far while protecting and respecting yourself, and I think there are some pretty easy (at least to me) changes that can be made without it being very disruptive.

I'm hoping to do a blog post about all of it in the near-ish future. I want to gather my thoughts on the nuclear option vs compromise and where it can be applied. I want to think through the financial and mental costs, how those costs could be upfront or long term, and recognize that these costs could feel greater to someone than others. Also things to consider when doing something for just yourself vs. needing to convince or help family and/or friends.

For reference I went about a month or so with an absolutely google-less android phone. I've replaced most of my online services with either self-hosted or privacy respecting alternatives (or both) and I've been collecting a catalog of great open source apps to do most things. Right now I'm evaluating what of that I could convince my wife – a non-techy person who just wants it to work without having to think too hard about it – to realistically use and enjoy.

I went through something similar. What I noticed was that 99% of stuff was completely effortless. The 1% that was a challenge was them seeing some app/game advertised and going to install it and not finding it in FDroid, or installing from Aurora and having it not work because no Google Play stuff installed.
