California’s new law forces digital stores to admit you’re just licensing content, not buying it
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a law that will force digital storefronts to disclose that you’re just buying a license for digital purchases like games, movies, and music.

Just a reminder that you're better off cancelling that monthly streaming subscription and buy your music and other entertainment directly from artists.
More direct support, and you actually get to own the things you pay for!

@stefan Just here to say: Yes, do it! I #canceled my #spotify account about a year ago and since then, I have discovered more music than in ten years getting spotify's suggestions.
(Not even speaking about ethical reasons why it is better to stay away from spotify et al. Yes, I download torrents again, but yes, I go to concerts a lot and donate to bands. Pretty sure they are financially happier with that.)

Absolutely, you can never go wrong cancelling Spotify!
(Cancelled myself a while ago, and haven't really been too enticed by the free version.)

@stefan Where do you go for music discovery?

@TraitorJoe These days I mostly follow bands on Bandcamp, but as for discovering new music, I often end up learning about current artists through watching videos about music theory and production, as this has been my new hobby for the past 2-3 years.
And there are of course great accounts to follow on here, like @radiofreefedi and @labr for finding smaller, independent artists.
I'm actually curious to hear what others do.

Folks who don't use Spotify and other major streaming platforms, where do you go to discover new music these days? #music #MusicDiscovery

There's also Soundcloud, https://hypem.com (not using it much lately, but really should!).
Oh and I also have to give a shout-out to https://bandwagon.fm!

@stefan I think the article really is targeting video games and video. Are there examples of music getting removed from consumer purchases? ...maybe Apple music? Because music streaming offers you basically everything its not going anywhere and an absurdly good deal for heavy music listeners. Thankfully Spotify has a lot of alternatives because it has gone deep down the enshittification hole.

@johnglass Good question!
Not the same thing, but I do remember reading about Amazon pulling ebooks from people's devices before:
How Amazon's remote deletion of e-books from the Kindle paves the way for book-banning's digital future.
Let's give Amazon the benefit of the doubt—its explanation for why it deleted some books from customers' Kindles actually sounds halfway defensible....

@stefan
I just wish there weren't a bunch of artists I like that basically have no way to buy their music that I can find. I check like three services and look for physical CDs for some of them and they're only on streaming -
@lindsey Ah, yeah, that's a shame.
I wonder if reaching out to them directly, as a fan, might help nudge them. Not even to switch outright, just as an additional revenue stream.
