Some people: “Hey the Fediverse has so and so problem and isn’t developing fast enough”
Also them:
- Don’t donate to Mastodon development (if they’re able)
- Don’t donate to their instance hosts (if they’re able)
- Don’t make formal issues on GitHubI’m starting to think that some people don’t know #Mastodon is a non-profit, open-source project? Of course things are gonna go slow, the project is not a VC farm

This is a major issue, and even on the instance moderation level, we are having to constantly remind users that this is not a corporation and that the people who run it are literally just other users who want to build a good social network. On the flip side though, a lot of the complaints I see are that people have made requests on GitHub and been told that these things are not priorities for the development team. It's kind of strange to me what has been successfully implemented on forks, yet hasn't even been started on the main build. I don't know that it's actually the case, but I can see why a lot of black and jewish users feel like they are being ignored by the main development team, and I feel like making the network more welcoming for those particular minority groups should be a priority if we want to keep growing it.

@Raccoon Agreed, moderation tools are definitely something that needs heavy improvement. Being a tiny instance, we’ve yet to get any discrimination against our users (or against ourselves), but they’re of course out there on the large instances. Those instances simply don’t have the resources, bandwidth, or tools to tackle the problem. And I think moderation troubles in general are an issue we need to tackle together head on instead of jumping ship to other platforms.

There's also the issue of there being a lot of bad actor instances out there, and users getting funneled to servers that are not adequately blocking them. One of the main issues I keep hearing about is that black users will join an instance, be harassed by someone from one of the bad actor instances, and either they won't report it or the report will be ignored, or at best, the account will be blocked but not the server. What's worst is when they block someone, then get called out by a blockbot, bringing down a swarm. Some people are saying that importing blocklists automatically, as opposed to manually uploading the CSV file, should be a built-in feature, but I don't think this solves the problem existing block lists very widely in quality, and many of them block instances which are fine and miss instances which are harassment vectors. It's why I made the curated TechHub block list, but we can't just make "use that" the official advice.

Something else I will say about the VC farm thing, there have been a couple billionaires who have made their own social networks at this point, like Spoutable, talking about how they want an open space that isn't overrun by Nazis, but it feels a bit telling that the Fediverse exists already and has tens of millions of users, but they decide to go off and make their own walled garden that's basically just Twitter except they control the content instead of Elon.I wonder what would happen if one of these billionaires decided to actually put their money where their mouth is, make an instance, and hire someone to make a solid fork or fund the development of one of the major server software projects, like Mastodon or Misskey.
