It's a shame that only ABBA had the cash reserves for something like the virtual live performance technology of Voyage. I'd rather see a vision of a band or artist at their zenith than a barely able to sing rip off that some are today (obvs some bands ...

@hedders yep. Too many classic artists now augmented by backing tracks and backing singers (*cough* a certain ex Pink Floyd member) . I know you want an income but you are trashing your own legacy. Do "an evening with" type talk tours or something.

@Black_Flag I feel for your traumatic experience. Counselling is available.

@emsquared That was actually one of the better shows I've been to. Take that as you will.

@Black_Flag Was that post Rick Parfitt then?

@emsquared No. A good ten years before the coke debt became due. But about 20 years after any hit of note.
-
@emsquared quite. I remember watching the lavishly-shot Depeche Mode concert film βSpirits in the Forestβ, and just thinking βthis is shit, this is a horrible performanceβ. Dave sounded like a Vic Reeves club singer, and Martinβs voice was all thin and reedy and cracked.

@Black_Flag I guess Quo always had a loyal following. Didn't I read that the harcore fans would turn their back on one of the non rock songs at live gigs (Living on an Island? or was it In the army now?). Bands can't stay in the zeitgeist forever. As long as they can put on a decent show then fine.

@emsquared I've never seen so many sideburns and denim in one place.
And that was just the women.
Boom boom.

@hedders My other half saw them a couple of years ago prior to Fletch's passing and thought they were good but I see Dave now and he looks like a middle manager estate agent. I guess rock & pop is all about pretending you are forever young or at least young at heart. I find you run the risk of being your own tribute band and not even a good one.
-
@emsquared A lot of these older bands look like they just wandered on stage from the local Wetherspoons. Iβd like to see a bit of old fashioned flair.
-
@stefp Ha. Don't they? Pub band at stadium prices. They spaffed the money up the wall and still need a pension top up or divorce settlement booster (eternal teenagers in pensioner bodies). Not all heritage bands and artists are like that but too many are.
-
@emsquared That's the rub of it. It's a rare band that manages to age without basically turning into a Vegas cover band version of themselves.
Judas Priest seem to have pulled it off. Suede, too. The trick seems to be to still have something to say, and to make new music that is actually good.
-
@hedders It can be done. Each to their own I guess. Other half got complimentary's to see Echo and the Bunnymen a month or so back. Lead singer never lit up by stage lighting so hidden in a shadow (age shy?), mumbling between numbers and begrudgingly doing bare minimum. If I'd paid for those tickets I'd want my money back. The audience was too pissed to care. An expensive karaoke night out.
-
@emsquared I have huge respect for Johnny Marr and the way he has gone about not exploiting The Smiths name or heritage.
-
@stefp yes. Other half went to see him at Kelvinbridge bandstand and was blown away. Also the recent arificatiins by him in the face of so much Mozza bleating.
-
@hedders @emsquared Mrs Lightyear got tickets for Duran Duran a couple of years back. I went along begrudgingly. They were bloody great; all the hits, the new stuff is good, LeBon was in great voice and played up the campiness. I think they know they're seen as a bit cheesy, but it hasn't put them off pushing out some strong material over the last decade or two.
-
@Bez_Lightyear @hedders I'm sure. One of the great exceptions. It can be done.
-
@Bez_Lightyear @hedders You can rise above former stereotypes of youth. Look at Rick Astley for heavens sake.
