I'm new to Canada and Ontario.
I'm seeing the Ford spent hundreds of millions allowing alcohol sales in corner stores.
How the hell does that work? Why does the province spend money to let people sell stuff? I thought it was just a change in regulations...?
-
@rwg There was a monopoly/exclusivity contract with the Beer Store company to sell alcohol. To allow it in corner stores, they needed to "break" that contract early, which had a penalty clause.
They could have waited an extra year and spend $0 on penalties but apparently it was urgent.

@jerome perhaps I am speaking out of turn, since I am not Canadian, but... that sounds stupid as hell

@rwg Quebec and Ontario, being the 2 largest Canadian provinces but also being neighbour means that people often compare what is done on one side vs the other. Quebec has allowed beer in corner stores for decades. So it's been a source of ridicule or some sort that Ontario could not do the same. So it's seen as a political win to finally allow what many have been waiting for decades.
But again.. could have waited just an extra year.

@jerome I kinda get that bit. I lived in Utah for a decade, so I was no stranger to weird regional alcohol laws. But as you say, why not wait a year? Makes no sense
