It’s been over a quarter century since I last worked in (food) service.
But drop me off in front of a big expensive hotel, and I gotta find myself a spot to get oriented.
And that spot is never the lobby. It’s the dingy bit out back where the employees have their smoke breaks.
“Some kind of instinct. Memory, of what they used to do. This was an important place in their lives”

@randomgeek nice to know where your reanimated corpse will wind up
-
@onelson I find the certainty comforting.
-
@randomgeek gotta ask, front of house or back of house?
-
@shadowspar roughly four years back followed by five front. And of course a few sandwich shops that were both.
-
@randomgeek oh wow, mad respect, that's a much longer stint than me. I spent four months slinging pizzas and around eight months baking at Tim's. to this day I think very highly of anyone who can deal with working front, because while most customers are great, some... are not
-
@shadowspar even the ones that aren’t great are usually — manageable. All you need is a neurospicy server with great masking skills.
-
@shadowspar also, food service was closest our family had to a vocation while trying to become successful artists. Mom spent years as bartender, grandpa was bartender and cook.
Expected it to be my aspiring artist career path until the dot-com boom gave me a new opportunity.
