An honest apology contains an admission of what the person did wrong, and the words "I'm sorry" or a variation thereof.
It may contain an explanation of what exactly went down, but it must be understood that an explanation is never a justification.
A disingenuous apology contains contextualization of the person's wrongdoing against the transgressions of their victims, be they true or merely perceived as such.
A dead giveaway for a dishonest apology is when it does not even contain an apology at all.

If you've publicly fucked up in a space such as the fedi, the only course of action is being open about what you did, asking for forgiveness, and then never doing the thing again.
You may be tempted to save face and take control the narrative about what you did. It takes courage to admit a mistake. Doubling down on abusive behavior is easier to some people.
But if you do that, then it's clear that you aren't actually sorry for what you did wrong; you actually merely regret that your abusive actions have consequences.
