Let me get this straight: it wasn't about the price of eggs after all?
"Republican perceptions of the economy have changed abruptly. As Philip Bump of the Washington Post notes, since Trump’s election, there’s been a 16-point drop in the percentage of Republicans who say they were doing worse a year ago than they are now."

As Philip Bump says, when a Republican is voted into office, suddenly the economy, which was catastrophic in the minds of Republicans up to that magic moment, changes in the twinkling of an eye and is hunkydory. The same old economy inherited from the Democrats….
If this is true, then why do the media incessanty harp on the Democrats-ignore-working-class-Americans meme to explain why Republicans gain office?

@wdlindsy It was never about the economy. Add to that that Republicans lie when they are polled because that was their plan. It’s because she wasn’t an old white male.

"Voters may have been willing to risk it all for slightly lower egg prices, but regardless of what they thought they were doing, they’re getting a chaos machine — and that sort of thing gets exhausting pretty quickly."

"As The New Republic editor Michael Tomasky wrote, 'It wasn’t the economy. It wasn’t inflation, or anything else. It was how people perceive those things, which points to one overpowering answer.' The right-wing media now controls the agenda.
For those of us who grew up on a steady diet of truth-telling, it’s gut-wrenching to see this mega misinformation machine grow into a multi-headed monster."

"It's an information war. And I said this depressingly that Putin and our enemies won the information war for now without firing a bullet. And Steve Bannon 10 years ago said that the enemy is not the Democrats, it's the media. It's a long term plan. Republicans have won for now, just like they've won the judges."

Even though it seems like we're in a world of hurt for the next few years, David Rothkopf joins me to discuss why there are still pockets of resistance and optimism for those of us opposed to fascism.

Just today, I talked to someone who lives on the economic edge. Her parents were East German immigrants to the US. She makes a living cleaning houses. She's very bright but has limited education. From her parents, she has inherited quite a bit of antisemitic prejudice, and has attached anti-Black prejudice to that. Her take on the election:
"There's one good thing about it: my cryptocurrency has just skyrocketed."
She waxes poetic about Musk and DOGE.

I recently got emails from various democrats saying they were going on “listening tours.”I want to shake them and say, “No listening tour! Go on a shouting tour! Double down on key values. Start a FOX equivalent. Get your messaging aligned! Don’t pause, don’t worry about being nice, and don’t hedge and dodge every time some GOPer lobs an insult at you! Ffs!”
Or if they are going to do all this listening, don’t listen to white people. We are (generally speaking) a mess

"We can confidently predict that within a month of Trump’s second inauguration, the economic stats won’t have changed significantly, but Republicans and probably idiots in the mainstream media will be kvelling about the bright new economy the Great Man has ushered in. Even if he follows through on those inflation-boosting tariffs."

Jonathan V. Last points to a 2002 YouGov report about the gap between Americans' perceptions and reality:
"Here are some of the percentages that Americans (on average) think their fellow citizens are:
Transgender: 21 percent
Muslim: 27 percent
Jewish: 30 percent
Black: 41 percent
Live in New York City: 30 percent
Gay or lesbian: 30 percent"

"If you go down the list of characteristics YouGov asked people about, you see a persistent mistake in one direction: Americans vastly overestimate the numbers of people in minority groups. And by “minority groups” I’m talking not just about racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities. They wildly overestimate all kinds of minorities."
