Fortunately, the 5V wire was still red. The wires pulled out of the USB connector and I ended up splicing them to cannibalized USB A to micro B cable. Was mildly concerned about letting the magic smoke out, but it worked.

@ryanc Do it like me: never learn what the colours should be, so you always have to test them. Way more annoying, but a bit safer.

@oscherler @ryanc 30 years into futzing with electricity and I never trust the colors. Even in household electric circuits. I just assume that somebody at some point has screwed up.
