@woozle : Is there a markup for using a different shade inside quoted blocks?

@riley I don't think so... but I'm not sure what you mean about the
[...]
bit. Where does that happen? -

"Huzzah," the Mad Hatter said. "In this trying hour, we must [a lengthy lecture about the geopolitical significance of the biorhythms of expressions of freedom] which is why all birds sing in minor on Tuesdays."
The bracketed part should be of the outer toot's colour, not the quote's colour.

@riley This is how I'm seeing that post -- is your UI showing it differently?
By "the bracketed part", do you mean the line on the left, or...?

@woozle No, this is how it shows. What should I do to mark bracketed portion as not being the quoted text?

@woozle There's a custom for marking skips and alterations in quotations, most of typically byusing angular brackets, [like this]. The very point of the brackets is that they mark switch back from the voice of the quoted to the voice of the quoter, so if the quotes are specially coloured, the bracketed parts shouldn't.
Clearly, Mastodon is not recognising brackets themselves as this sort of markup. But is there an alternative kind of markup that I could use to get them coloured right?

@woozle This mock-up shows what I want it to look like:

@woozle If I got to design my own mark-up for it, I'd probably use either
[(...)]
or[/.../]
for this sort of thing. Or in over-HTMLised contexts,<.ed>...</.ed>
, which would translate into<span class="ed">...</span>

@riley Ahh! Ok, here's what I understand at this point: you'd like a way to add annotations within a quoted text such that the annotations are in the same color as non-quoted text (because they're not part of the quote).
Have I got that right?

@woozle Yes!
And I'm kind of hoping that the Mastodon-flavoured Markdown already has some way to do it that I just don't yet know of, but if not, I could probably submit a PR or something.

@riley If you happen to come across an official guide to MastoMarkdown, let me know -- I had to work it out by trial-and-error.

@woozle FWIW, in my book, reST is one of the best-developed WikiMarkups out there. Still has its issues, of course, but it's really thoughtfully put together, and manages to avoid a lot of the sort of flaws that are common among text-based quasi-in-band markup notations.
