i just realized the crew they have prepared, look like out of a cult.
what's the name of that death cult that they all offed themselves in their jumpsuits and Adidas?

the wife though.
what's interesting about this scene is the set up for the ending.
would you rather be abducted by aliens or live in suburban domesticity hell?

this scene, after he built the giant model of the peak and the wife calls and they're bickering and the tv is blaring with the evacuation report and HE IS NOT LOOKING AT THE DAMN TELEVISION. itβs almost as if Spielberg decided it was one long ass pun of the concept of ALIENATION.

LMAO i just reckoned the guy selling gas masks in this evacuation scene. pure Americana.
and now come in the french horns. John Williams is truly Spielbergβs ear.

Spielberg did this also in E.T. and briliantly: showing the lengths to which the state goes to gaslight people.

ok, start with a tone.
up a full tone.
down a major third.
now drop an octave.
up a perfect fifth.
nothing.
nothing at all.

what i love about this scene is the static noise in the background. this thing is so massive and has so much vibrating metal it just distort all around it.

the lights
the ship gyrating & revealing its massiveness
the techs standing aghast
the Ray Bans
the one tear streaking the keyboardistβs cheek
the set-up of this ending is just β

the exploding glass is just the cherry on top of all the ambient sound designed for this scene to make it seem natural to the place and action.
seriously, the twinkle twinkle little star jam would be nothing without the ambient sounds layered under and over it.

when the people started coming out of the ship, not only did 11 year old me started crying, the whole theatre burst out clapping. we Puerto Ricans are notorious for clapping a good landing.
