Argh, the son (10 yo) keeps pestering us about Messenger KIds for chatting with his friends. As much as I don't mind the application in itself, but it is in a way grooming them towards later consumption of Big Tech social media. Additionally, I hate that you have to have a full #Facebook account as a parent for parental control.
Any suggestions?

It is grooming them for digital slavery and they don't need it. Your aversion is the correct instinct.
You could just tell the son, no. That's what I would do. I'd tell him he can chat with his friends when he is physically in meet space with them. He might be upset. Who cares. You're the boss and you know what's best for him. He doesn't.
Just my two cents worth.
