@parismarx i think it's 100% about the monopolies. there's so much innovation that could happen in smartphones. i like a physical keyboard and a phone with a square display, but none of the major manufacturers makes a phone like that (i know there are a number of people like me who miss blackberries and the like and would buy something like that if it existed). i bet there are people who don't want a gamillion megapixel 3 lens camera (all of which can break) and would trade that for some other feature. making the phones modular so you can mix and match parts--like sensors, or quality of sensors--and do aftermarket mods and upgrades would be fantastic. and that's just off the top of my head. if this weren't a completely monopolized market and there were people with resources experimenting with phone designs without fear of being destroyed by apple and google, who knows what cool variations they'd come up with. you already see the potential for this with chinese smartphone makers.

@walruslifestyle but you can buy shittier phones and there are companies making modular and more repairable phones. i would argue that actual market for that kind of product is niche because most people are not techies; they just want their stuff to work.

@parismarx @walruslifestyle wanting a crappier camera and such is why I got the iPhone XR. More affordable, but stay within the ecosystem.
I imagine part of the reason they release the ‘budget’ version rarely is because those people upgrade their phones so rarely.Square form factor could really mess with a lot of apps, lengthening development periods and causing all sorts of hassle unless devs are given plenty of time to prepare. BUT I don’t think this should be reason to not innovate
