The homepage sidebar should be available without the custom-homepage plugin and shouldn't require the lavender theme.

The homepage side bar is not in the widgets section in the admin control panel. There is a homepage footer but nothing else.

My issue is that I want a homepage side bar without using the custom homepage plugin. Is this available by default, is it a theme feature, is my install not working correctly, is it a bug?

iirc you can set a homepage side bar without using the custom-homepage plugin. What version of nodeBB do you have installed?

@Tanner Just checked, its available in Lavender theme and not vanilla and cerulean.

I'm on latest stable nodebb with custom theme, I will have to add it in to my theme.

@Scuzz basing your custom themes off of lavender is probably the best idea. That's what I did, and haven't had much experience with the vanilla theme yet, so I just assumed. My bad mate.

I'm not a fan of lavender and i think my main members prefer vanilla based themes too.
