@SparaxVenator that isn't the full error message. Try running ./nodebb dev and give us the full log.

A good starting point would be to disable all third-party plugins and see if that resolves the issue.

Thank you for the explanation. I will probably use a third-party database (firebase) for payments.
Using firebase, different operations can be done on the client side, without disturbing the main server. I think this is very useful for a smoother user experience.

I fixed my own issue. Apparently some install scripts fail when run as root (or with sudo). I'm not sure why this is the case, but I got everything to work by running sudo chown -R ralph:www-data /path/to/nodebb && ./nodebb upgrade as a standard user.
Upgrading nodebb from v0.5 to v0.8 (problems)
