We returned from our trip south last night. I flew IFR, since I knew we’d need to shoot an approach to get in at MIC. The route I filed included the IAF and IF for the approach, and ATC confirmed that that was the approach I wanted. But before we reached the IAF, ATC assigned me an altitude 500' below the IAF, which I found confusing. We broke out enough for them to give us a visual approach direct to the airport (it was sketchy; we were barely below the bases). Never had that happen before.
