"You have the shock of Tuesday, when all of these pagers exploded, killing 12 people, injuring close to 3,000, and then, yesterday, more explosions in walkie-talkies and not clear what other electronic devices. The total, 37 dead, what, something like ...

"It was not purely the scale of the attack – substantial though it was – that caused shock and disbelief among the Lebanese, but the pervasiveness of it. Doctors tossed away their pagers, wedding planners dispensed with their walkie-talkies, and parents disconnected their baby monitors."

The impact of the latest outrage in Lebanon is devastating for the citizens of a country caught between Israel and Hezbollah, says author Naji Bakhti

"They probably thought the world would applaud. The Israeli planners behind one of the most spectacular intelligence actions in the country’s history – targeting thousands of Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon and beyond by exploding the pagers in their pockets – would certainly have expected an ovation for the sheer audaciousness of it."

/4The pager bombing of Hezbollah was jaw-dropping. Will it make Israel safer? Not for long | Jonathan Freedland
Reliance on military prowess has become a way of avoiding the path the country must now take: diplomacy, says Guardian columnist Jonathan Freedland

"Instead, the attack has been branded indiscriminate in Europe and elsewhere because, inevitably, not every Hezbollah operative was alone when their pager exploded – some were close to civilians, including children – and because the fear it’s left behind in Lebanon does not discriminate. Ordinary people doing ordinary things in Beirut or Sidon now contend with a new anxiety, nervous around anyone with an electronic device who might just be a member of Hezbollah."

Imagine the repercussions if Iran did this to Israel.

@clintruin It would be full-page news, first-page, blaring headlines.
People are people, but so many of us, media leading the way, seem intent on pretending that some people aren't people on the same level as "real" people and "important" people.

@wdlindsy Great thread! Putting aside establishment voices in the West, many of us now have a completely different opinion of Israel than we may have had prior to the atrocities of the past 11 and a half months. As extreme as the views of Hezbollah members may seem to us, Israeli actions and views can also be defined as outrageous and bloodthirsty. I now have a very different idea of who I consider a 'terrorist', and it's not the people fighting western terrorism and imperialism.

@dbattistella I'm glad you found the thread useful. Like you, I've been on a trajectory in which I have had to confront the fact that Israel's behavior now is the behavior of a rogue state that deserves censure by the world community. The Jewish people have suffered atrocious historic injustice and attacks on them can in no way be defended. But the Jewish people are not synonymous with Israel. Commentary by morally insightful Jewish thinkers about this has helped me see issues more clearly.

“See, we can do terrorism too” is probably not the look the Israelis should be chasing.

@wdlindsy Yes, anti-Zionist Jews have been some of the most outspoken critics of Israel's US-backed genocide. Brave, brave folk who have had to not only bear the consequences for speaking out in support of Palestine that so many others have, but also in many cases the rejection of their families and communities.

@dbattistella I very much agree: powerfully moral voices reflecting the rich moral tradition in which their religion stands, courageously speaking out when strong forces are determined to silence them.
