When you consider relative install sizes of various Fediverse software, it becomes clear why #Mastodon often needs to move in ways that ensure we don't break things and do right by all to ensure interoperability and trust & safety in the new things we ...

@stefan Claire did actually start that a few years ago, but everyone complained we weren't doing other things so priorities shifted to keep people happy. GTS's brand new reply controls is actually based on a FEP Claire wrote
-
@esvrld and there's work ongoing to improve that situation. But as with everything else, it takes time to make progress when you're resource constrained. Folks can only be in so many places at once.
Also, I'm not sure which instance you're referring to having shutdown due to a big release.
-
@thisismissem Well it's a bit of a relief that there were people who did think about this.
Still -- and this is more of a rhetorical question, but it's hard to imagine 8 years worth of work that's higher priority than reply controls.
That would've given folks more time to tackle things like better moderation tools, as there would be a lot less opportunity for harassment, I'd imagine.
Oh well, water under the bridge now, I suppose.
Best I can do is remind people to donate to the project.
-
@stefan a lot of stuff that touches activitypub takes a long time to get anywhere, unfortunately

@thisismissem Right. But I mean come on, 8 years? We have fediverse:creator before reply controls? I get that that was a lot easier to implement, but that just proves my point. I'd rather wait another 8 years without a few nice-to-have features if that meant that people would be safer here than on a blockchain VC-funded startup.
-
@thisismissem Well I don't mean to put you on the spot here. Just feeling a bit of a FOMO, I guess. But also, it really is upsetting to see so many people giving the fediverse a fair try and then being driven off.
-
@thisismissem As a side note, quote boosts are also a "nice to have" feature. I know many ask for this, but so far I haven't seen many people say that the lack of it drove them away.
Harassment and mansplaining did.
-
@stefan @thisismissem there is no way to objectively prioritise features.
-
@joshix @thisismissem You know what, that's a fair point, give me a minute.
-
@joshix @thisismissem Right, that's why the community needs to determine what's important for them.
Really hard to imagine a poll that would show that people here want author tags* more than reply controls, though.
-
@stefan I hear you, I do. Hopefully reply controls will be properly specified and can be the next big feature
-
@stefan right, but quote posts got funding first
-
@stefan @joshix fwiw, author tags weren't implemented by the actual core team initially. As for quote posts, last year people beat us with a stick for not having quote posts, no one really cared about reply controls. It's really hard to pick "what's the next six months of work" when you've so many demands being thrown at you and not enough funding

@[email protected] @[email protected] I hope the next one can be #fetchallreplies and reply controls after that since work on the implementation got picked up now and I'd consider that a big step forward.

@vetehinen @stefan there is a pull request open for fetch all replies, I'm not sure how close it is to merge, that's by @jonny
I'm not sure if it has Mastodon managing the replies collection or not yet (that's a prerequisite for reply controls)
-
@thisismissem @stefan @joshix have you considered a bounty board where people can vote by providing funding?
-

@SMillerNL @stefan @joshix once, yes, but the change ended up being negative for trust & safety after I played with the implementation, so I canned it.
But in general I've not seen bounty boards work well, they tend to attract people looking for easy money rather than folks who have a desire to actually push a project forwards
-
@thisismissem @stefan @joshix yeah, it definitely has its issues. I wouldnβt open the rewards to the public (had some negative experiences with that too) but make it more of a βdonation with a marker to indicate the preferred featureβ if that makes sense.
-
@SMillerNL @stefan @joshix maybe, I also need to be careful around how contracts in finance work, which is also the reason I don't collect money with an issue.
