One day #Canada should require immersion education of local Indigenous languages for all students.

@chris I support the sentiment, and believe that Indigenous culture is important and should be kept alive.
However, requiring everyone to learn a language they most likely won’t use is impractical. The same with French, to be honest.
I was in French Immersion all the way from P-12. I was at one point fully bilingual. I am now very rusty, due to my lack of opportunity to use French in daily life. I think it hindered the overall quality of my education, due to the inadequate French staffing.

@chris as someone who took French immersion as a kid, I would've loved this as an option.

@curmudgeonaf I hear where you're coming from but I don't see it as impractical at all. All learning is practical and if it connects people in a more direct way to their local communities that's a good thing.
I am also reminded that North America (Canada and USA) are quite unique in the world in having educational systems that are so devoid of instruction in multiple languages. It puts us at a disadvantage. We need a complete rethink on how we encourage language learning.

@chris I think it’s important to teach children about other cultures, and provide a rounded education in all aspects.
I’m just saying it’s not necessary to force them to learn a whole language, just to teach them about Indigenous culture and the history of colonialism.
Do you speak multiple languages? If so, do you actually use them regularly? As someone who does, and speaks English 99% of the time, it’s a waste of time to learn them and not use it. That effort can be more productively used

@chris I don’t use French for my job, I don’t have any Family or Friends who I communicate with in French. My entire life is spent in English. The only thing I occasionally use it for, is to watch a hockey game on the French channel, or maybe read an article in French.
I would have rather focused my educational time on other topics that would have been more beneficial to my daily life.
What they should teach kids more about is personal finance and budgeting. That’s what people really need

@chris My favourite part of this idea is the implication that every Indigenous language would have abundant teachers

@curmudgeonaf I do know multiple languages but only use English. I still definitely disagree that it is a waste of time. Thankfully this is Mastodon and we don't have to hate each other for disagreeing!

@curmudgeonaf I thibk we greatly underestimate people's (especially kids) ability to learn many things. Again, other countries teach many languages and are also bevery business-acute.

@beandreams YES. preservation of the language can't happen without teachers!
