If there are any of you who know about #blackStar #guitar amps, I would like some advice. I've been saving up for a new 2x12 MkIII HT60. A first gen HT60 2x12 has come up for sale locally and I'm having trouble finding out the differences between the Mk I and Mk III. I don't intend to use the Blackstar software itself but the USB interface would still be nice. Mainly, concerned about straightforward tone and component quality between them, especially since newer isn't always better.

To be clear, I'm not asking about alternative amps and models, though if someone were selling a similarly priced and spec'd Mesa Boogie, Fender, or PRS *tube* amp, I would definitely want to know about it .

@vwbusguy Agree - arguably many Mk1++ versions are sold as improvements when actually they incorporate savings. Ask any synth player if they'll exchange their DX7 Mk1 for the Mk2 for example. I have a Blackstar HT5-R Mk1 and I wouldn't exchange it for their Mk2 or Mk3 versions. Apart from anything else, only the Mk1 has a 15" speaker, the other two had a 12" fitted. I'm not saying that this makes it better, but it certainly had to be more expensive to produce.

@stratlantic One big difference I read is that MkIII can accept 6L6 tubes. Can your MkI do 6L6 or is it only EL34?
-
@vwbusguy Are the 6L6 tubes of a wider diameter? The tubes on the HT5 fit into very tight recesses inside the amp, therefore anything bigger simply wouldn't fit.

@stratlantic AFAIK it's not a matter of it physically fitting but if the electronics can handle the difference in current.

@stratlantic I've been looking at the 6CA7 tube, though, which is EL34 compatible but behaves more like a 6L6.

@stratlantic As an update, I decided that the MkIII wasn't worth 3x the price and brought home this crazy heavy (and LOUD) first gen HT60 2x12.
