@mastodonmigration @lawyersgunsnmoney i mean, fwiw, orion is pretty good, we got trusted partners on both sides of the pond workin' on her! she's a damn fine machine, can tell you that!

Orion is amazing! The rest of the Artemis program is pretty nuts. Landing Elon's big rocket on the moon and taking an elevator to the surface...insane.
-
@mastodonmigration @lawyersgunsnmoney yeahhh... HLS starship is... not optional for the task at hand, something i always say is that it's like using one of those big dump trucks you see at open pit mines to go to the grocery store (pic for reference)

Don't agree with all of this, but the parts about Starship are on target.
Plus, refueling in space and landing such a behemoth upright in 1/6 G are going to be.... difficult.

@mastodonmigration @lawyersgunsnmoney yeah, Artemis does have its flaws, that's for sure, SLS, she.. she's interesting, that's for sure, needless to say, there are things within the program that either need to be cut entirely or seriously refined if we are to succeed at sending people back to the moon.

Interesting discussion of just the fluid (refeuling) problem:
[Interview] Fluids Get Really Weird In Space. NIAC 2024
Fluids behave very differently in space. We can make good use of it. For example, a recent NIAC grant was awarded to investigate a Magnetohydrodynamic Drive for Hydrogen and Oxygen Production in Mars Transfer. This is a system that should provide breathing oxygen for a journey to Mars made out of water with no moving parts in it.

@mastodonmigration @lawyersgunsnmoney oh yeah, the LH2, a real pain in the exhaust pipe to work with, that's for sure. that's why LVs like starship, vulcan and new glenn use methalox as their primary fuel source, it's easy to work with!
-
@mastodonmigration @lawyersgunsnmoney oh wait, i just looked at it, not what I was expecting lol, but still, my point stands.

Easier, but not easy at 0G.

Thing is there seems a real 'Emperor's New Clothes' thing going on with SpaceX and Artemis. Experts seems to know it is crazy, but are afraid to speak out because it is sure death for their careers. In the linked podcast, just listen to how circumspect the Georgia Tech professor is. But you know he thinks it's bolox.
