Anyone else finding themselves holding back PRs so they can submit them next month for #Hacktoberfest?
(Yes, I realise this makes me a bad person.)
(And, yes, I'm still sad they don't give out t-shirts any more.)
-
@Edent did they announce there’s no more shirts? 🥲
-
-
@Edent I'm somewhat confident I coined the term Hacktoberfest
-
@librenews interesting! Did you document it somewhere publicly?
-
@Edent Nope, though I could find something if I really wanted
-
@Edent No because like most sane people I won't have anything to do with that shit show...
-
@tomh hey, Tom! You know that thing you like? I think it's rubbish.
-
@Edent But we began calling this Hackfest in Germany "Hacktoberfest" as the it was happening and the beer flowed. For all I know it wasn't the first usage but I noticed it cropping up soon after https://wiki.mozilla.org/OpenNews/2011_Archive/hackfest/berlin

@Edent I think they did make some changes but they caused real chaos at one point by encouraging huge numbers of trivial PRs to popular projects entirely out of the blue by people with no real interest in the project that were just trying to get points by changing one word in a README or something so there is a reason they got a bad name in many communities as sad as that might be.
-
@tomh why are you telling me stuff I already know?
I've participated in it for the last half-dozen years - both as a maintainer and a contributor.
